Please join us as we celebrate Joe Crowley's first book of poetry, Hats Off to the Cap (published by Sundance's in-house press, Baobab), on Wednesday, April 27, from 7 to 8 pm. This event is part of our celebration of National Poetry Month.

This inspiring and moving collection, released April 16, opens with poems about a childhood in Iowa, which provides the backdrop for enduring life lessons: the feeling of home, the value of a quick wit, and responses to injustice. The book ends with a meditation on retirement and what it means to be in the final chapters of one’s life. This capacious, wide-ranging book is charged with playfulness, history, deep insight, and a passion for language.

Born and raised in Iowa, Crowley is the former president of the University of Nevada, Reno. A respected community member and supporter of education, he has also served as president of San Jose State University and the NCAA. While Crowley has authored five books and co-edited a sixth, this is his first collection of poems. To hear Joe read one of his poems, please watch this video.

With the publication of Hats Off to the Cap, audiences who’ve long admired and enjoyed the work of Joe Crowley can hold his poems in their hands. These poems are much like the poet himself:  wise and witty, both reverent and irreverent, always fully aware of what it means to be a sentient human being. This is a book full of music, salient detail, and deep compassion. Savor, savor”Gailmarie Pahmeier, Reno Poet Laureate
