If you like literature that challenges you, read this book. It’s funny, tense, and heartbreaking. If you know as little about the Troubles in Northern Ireland as I did, this book is a good introduction. Written in a conversational, stream-of-consciousness style, it perfectly captures what it’s like to live in a community where danger is the norm and gossip is accepted as fact.

Anna Burns was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is the author of two novels, No Bones and Little Constructions, and of the novella, Mostly Hero. No Bones won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize and was short-listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction. She lives in East Sussex, England.
